We recently published an article about looking after your cat during the cold winter season, which can be found here: http://wercats.com/keep-your-kitty-safe-this-winter/. However, we have had some of our Australian followers contact us and ask us about the complete opposite – how to look after you cat in the extreme heat of summer.
So, we thought we’d put together this article just for our followers down-under, but it will become useful for our Northern Hemisphere followers in a few months anyways. Here are a few tips to keeping your kitty cool during summer.
First and foremost, make sure that your cat has access to clean water. They need to keep hydrated (just like us) during those hot days. It might also be a good idea to provide multiple sources of water so you make it easy for your cat to drink whenever it needs to. If you want to spoil your kitty, I’ve seen some cool water fountains that you can use for cats, as they prefer fresh running water.
Good ventilation is also essential. Using fans or air conditioning will help to cool the air and keep t moving. Air flow helps to cool down a cat in a way that is similar to sweating (Thanks to: http://www.catster.com/the-scoop/10-ways-to-help-your-cat-beat-the-summer-heat)
If your cat prefers to spend the day outdoors, (maybe chasing kangaroos 🙂) then, ensure that they have a shady retreat with available supply of fresh water. Also, raising their bed off the ground helps with air flow.
If your cat is a long hair variety, then consider giving it a shave. It might make them look a bit funny, but they will certainly appreciate it on those hot steamy days. Just imaging wearing a fur coat while out in the sun.
The following video has a couple of extra tips as well. What is important to remember is that heat stroke can be fatal to cats, so we want to do whatever we can to help our little furry treasures stay cool during those hot summer days.
